Okay, so we have to confess, when we rocked up to the media screening of TVNZ 2’s hot-new show Fresh Eggs, we we’re already a little bias. The black comedy, which premieres on Tuesday 19 February at 8.30pm on TVNZ 2, stars our awesome co-founder, Claire Chitham.
Claire’s character is classic Kiwi darling Penny, who met her beloved husband Wade (played by laugh-a-minute comic actor Cohen Holloway) at the age of 16. When Wade “quits” his job in HR once again, together they make the call to sell up the house, get rid of the “Facebook friends”, ditch the big smoke of Auckland and move their lives to small town New Zealand.
They purchase Rose Cottage, which at first appears to be an idyllic country location with its 1950s, fading yellow weatherboard and red tin roof house and miniature pony in the backyard. But nothing is as it seems. After all, Penny and Wade are quickly known as the “fresh eggs” because as country people know, those who move from the city can be identified by the sign they usually put out that says “fresh eggs/homemade jam and pickles”.
This is edgy, black comedy that starts with a whole lot of goodness but quickly takes as many unexpected winding turns as a back country New Zealand road. There’s crazy crooks (good mate Danielle Cormack plays one who is a total, downright disturbing bad ass), crooked cops and an eccentric writer (played by John Rhys Davies).
What this all means for Penny and Wade is that their move is going to be anything but rosy. But the good news? Penny’s like every good Kiwi woman - she’s a bit of a battler… who loves her husband… and who will do whatever it takes to protect their love, their marriage, their new home and ultimately, their lives.
Fresh Eggs screens on TVNZ2 on Tuesday nights at 8.30pm, starting on Tuesday 19 February. If you can’t catch it in real-time, watch it whenever you like ondemand.
